Fortune Favors

Fortune Favors Earlier today I read Michael Lewis remarkable remarks at the Princeton 2012 Commencement. His address was entitled Dont Eat Fortunes Cookie. Lewis, an art history major at Princeton, is a famous journalist and author. You may have seen Moneyball, the movie based on his eponymous book. Lewis first became famous writing Liars Poker, a memoir of his time working at the derivatives desk at Salomon Brothers during the run-up to the SL crisis. Heres what Lewis had to say about the path to his success: I was 28 years old. I had a career, a little fame, a small fortune and a new life narrative. All of a sudden people were telling me I was born to be a writer. This was absurd. Even I could see there was another, truer narrative, with luck as its theme. What were the odds of being seated at that dinner next to that Salomon Brothers lady? Of landing inside the best Wall Street firm from which to write the story of an age? Of landing in the seat with the best view of the business? Of having parents who didnt disinherit me but instead sighed and said do it if you must? Of having had that sense of must kindled inside me by a professor of art history at Princeton? Of having been let into Princeton in the first place? This isnt just false humility. Its false humility with a point. My case illustrates how success is always rationalized. People really don’t like to hear success explained away as luck â€" especially successful people. As they age, and succeed, people feel their success was somehow inevitable. They dont want to acknowledge the role played by accident in their lives. Theres a lot of other good things Lewis has to say (seriously, go read it). But I wanted to hone in on the point he made here, because its absolutely true. A few weeks ago I was talking to my dad about my job this job and how much I loved it. I told him how lucky I felt to had the opportunity to do it. My dad, in his dadlike way, corrected me, kindly but sternly: I was not lucky, he said, for I had worked hard, very hard, for a long time. Both of these things were true. Working hard and being lucky are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are both necessary conditions for any kind of success. If you want to achieve anything in life, you need to both work hard and be fortunate. This is the point I tried to make in my blog post Life is Improv last year for the commencement of the Class of 2011. And its echoed in the advice I received from shared from Ben Jones in Elizabeths post last week: You cant plan your life out ahead of time. But if you just try to always make the best decision, your life will later read back as making sense, even if you didnt see it that way going in. Theres a constant feedback loop between fortunate and hard work, and it goes something like this: if you are fortunate, you are positioned such that, if you work hard, you can achieve some success. And if you achieve some success, you may find yourself fortunately positioned such thatand on and on. Fortune is out of our control, but it doesnt drop out of the sky, puppet strings controlled by the twitchy fingers of the Fates. Some fortune comes from material circumstances: someone with a lot of privilege might not precisely have everything handed to them, but they still may be playing the game of life on the lowest difficulty setting there is. Other fortune comes from serendipity, like my story about meeting the girl I dated through most of college through a weird chain of events that started with a college riot neither of us attended, or the fact that, one day as I was scanning through job listings on Indeed.com, this position happened to come up on the screen. Most people cant do much about the material conditions into which they were born. But most people can do something about the fortune which arises through serendipity. One thing Ive learned about serendipitous fortune over the years is that you have to make space for it to grow and flourish. This kind of luck doesnt strike like a bolt of lightning from the blue. It grows tentatively from a small seed. The soil in which it takes root is constituted of the moments you make for it to do so. In a few days, the Class of 2012 will graduate from MIT. In a few months, the Class of 2016 will register for their first classes at MIT. Heres a piece of advice for you: dont work too hard. Dont misunderstand me. You should work hard. You must work hard. Just not too hard. See, many MIT students (or people who would be / were once MIT students) have the opposite problem of most people, which is that instead of not working hard enough, they work too hard. Too hard, that is, to ever take a step back from what they are doing to allow the space for good fortune to flourish. Sometimes its hard to take a step back. This is why I warn my freshman advisees against getting on the treadmill. The treadmill is the straightest path through MIT. It means doing the basic classes that everyone takes, not doing anything but your classes, doing all the sexiest internships (and not the ones which are interesting or different or that youd like to do and learn from), and then going straight into the highest paying job you can find because its there. This is where the work hard vs be lucky formulation skews too heavily towards the former. If all you do is keep your head down and work hard, then you will be so blindered by your work that you will never be able to look around and see what opportunities are out there. If you are always too busy to do anything but what youre working on right now, then you will miss the random things that will change your life. Most importantly, you will miss the random encounters with people be they future bosses or future lovers who will change your life for the better. It can be hard to avoid the treadmill, especially if you are someone who takes pride (and solace) in hard work. If youre an incoming freshman who wants to avoid the treadmill: go read 50 Things. Make a list. Check them off as you go along. If youre a graduating senior: the real world is here. Dive in. Enjoy it all. If youre anyone in particular: always remember to reserve time for the three Fs friends, family, and fortune. Good luck.

Plants are a necessary part of our everyday life. It is common knowledge that plants are vital to the existence of the human race. So if the Earth s vegetation was extinguished, it would logical to say that one result would be the extinction of most animal life. Most human beings do not pay attention to the extent that they use our planets resources and fail to properly replenish them. Although there are groups that work hard to conserve forest and vegetation, they have yet to be powerful enough to counter deforestation. Van Helmont planted a willow shout in two-hundred pounds of dirt, which he covered to protect it. He watered the five pound shout everyday for five years. When he weighed the shout it weighed one-hundred and sixty-five pound while the soil weighed only two ounces less that it s original two-hundred pounds. This experiment showed that the substances needed in order to grow the plant were not in the soil but what was being put in the soil, the water. Investigation Body Temperature Regulation Free Essays

Investigation: Body temperature regulation Guiding question: To what point does fur determine an arctic foxes wellbeing in the wild and how much protection against extreme temperatures does it really offer. Introduction: In this experiment I will be attempting to justify my findings that I have gathered over the course of a few different experiments. What I have been gathering information over is the suitability of an arctic foxes fur coat. The way I did so was by firstly dividing the experiments into three different steps. The first step entailed me attempting to put my model arctic fox in sub zero temperatures, as it would be in real life. What I did however was to put two models in the fridge. The first was a simple test tube covered with cotton, while the second had a space of cool air between the fur and the test tube simulating the space that would be created when a fox puffs out its fur almost like when we get goose pimples. The second experiment was designed to signal whether it changes anything to the temperature of my two test tubes if there is wind or not. I also did that same experiment of wind with my test tubes both drenched with water, again this would simulate a real life situation such as rain and wind or even snow and wind. Lastly I decided to put my test tubes (or arctic foxes! ) at normal room temperature to determine how much the tests really did influence the temperatures, in this way I could see what exactly was going on in terms of the cooling curve. Hypothesis: I expect the following experiment to give me a rough enough idea of arctic foxes protective measures and to help me better understand the full extent of their heat retaining abilities. I expect that my experiment has a great deal of flaws yet I also believe that there will be enough raw data to accurately determine a positive result. A positive result would be one that accurately gives me an idea of how to answer my guiding question. If I were to be more specific I would say that in my opinion the test tube with the hot air trapped between the cotton and the actual test tube will make no difference over the one with only cotton around it. I base this upon the theory that the air temperature between the test tube and the cotton will quickly loose any of its heat and will become redundant. I can prove this by continuing with the experiments I have designed to determine just that. Lastly I also believe that when I will confront the results of my two experiments, the one with only the fan and the other with the fan and the wet cotton I will find that the later will be much more susceptible to the cold and its temperature will decrease much more, due to the water that will constrict its ability to retain heat. Apparatus: * Two test tubes of equal dimensions * Cotton wool to simulate fur on an arctic fox * Pieces of wood that create a space of air between the tube and the wool * Timer to accurately give me a time span for which to conduct my experiment * Fan to simulate wind * Thermometer to place within test tube which will accurately calculate the temperature of the water held inside it. * Kettle to boil the water before placing it inside the test tube * Selotape to keep the cotton in place Fridge to simulate the sub zero temperatures that arctic foxes must live through Evaluation of apparatus: I think that the apparatus that I used are all extremely good and effective with a few key exceptions. Firstly the cotton is not quite the same material as the fur that an arctic fox uses, meaning that the experiment will not be true to real life. It will only give me a rough idea of the concepts of heat regulation within this particular species of animal, but that will be enough to answer the guid ing question. Another piece of apparatus that does not match exactly my requirements is the fan seeing as it only produces a certain amount of wind and in only one direction meaning that I will have to continually turn my test tube in order to keep the experiment fair and equal. Experiment one: In this experiment I will be placing my test tube’s at room temperature in order to determine before starting the other experiments what the cooling curve would be without it being put through any abnormal conditions. As I can see through the graphs above the temperature decreases very slowly from the initial 70 degree starting temperature. What happens is that test tube one and two slowly start to disconnect form each other, seeing as test tube one retains heat more effectively. I will now see whether the results will be drastically different with my other experiments. I have also noticed that the test tube 1 has a greater heat retaining ability that may well be due to the layer of air held between it and the test tube. To further prove this theory I will have to continue with my other experiments. Experiment two: In this experiment I have put my two test tubes inside the fridge in order to simulate the sub zero air conditions. In my hypothesis I said that I thought there would be no difference between test tube one and two. In the first experiment it was proved otherwise, yet in the following experiment there will be a greater temperature change so the differences in temperature will become more evident as time goes on. As you can see in the following graph there is a much more significant difference between test tube one and test tube two. This shows that so far the space of hot air between the cotton wool and the test tube is beginning to work much more effectively. This is completely against what I initially said in my hypothesis, where I clearly stated I thought It would make no difference. However if you look carefully at this gathering of information you are able to see that the results start to separate from each other much more significantly than the first experiment this shows that the more drastic the temperature the more it helps to have that layer of hot air to protect and keep the ‘arctic fox’ warm. Experiment three: This is the most important experiment, in my opinion to determine to what extent an arctic foxes fur helps keep out the cold. This is because I will be keeping the test tubes at room temperature while placing a fan in front of it to simulate wind and the cold wind that comes with that. It is not as drastic as my previous experiment but it is just as important. I expect to see results that are of a higher temperature than the last experiment, but I also expect the difference between the two test tubes to increase seeing as test tube 2 is much better equipt against this kind of heat and temperature difference.
